Ford Y-Block Tach Drive (272-312) Pro Series Ready to Run Distributor with Black Female Cap

Ford Y-Block Tach Drive (272-312) Pro Series Ready to Run Distributor with Black Female Cap

Upgrade your 1955–1957 Ford Thunderbird's Y-Block V8 — 272, 292, or 312 CID — with this Pro Series Ready-to-Run distributor, built specifically to support Thunderbird's factory mechanical tachometer drive. An onboard circuit board ignition module paired with a magnetic pickup trigger eliminates the need for a separate ignition box, while the external-coil design keeps the flexibility to run a higher-output coil. This version uses a female terminal cap.

This distributor is built specifically for Thunderbird applications equipped with a mechanical tach drive and is not the correct fit for other Y-Block vehicles that don't use this drive type — TSP's standard Y-Block Ready-to-Run distributor covers those applications instead. The housing is machined aluminum with a hardened steel shaft, and rotation is counterclockwise. This distributor requires a 12-volt electrical system with an alternator and a coil rated at 35,000 volts or higher; it is not compatible with generator-based charging systems or vehicles still running an active ballast resistor in the ignition circuit — the resistor should be removed or bypassed as part of installation.

What Is a Ready-to-Run (RTR) Distributor?
An RTR distributor has the ignition control module built directly into the housing, so it fires off a single 12-volt source without needing a separate ignition box wired into the circuit. This unit pairs that onboard module with a circuit board ignition control and magnetic pickup trigger, and is specifically configured to drive Thunderbird's factory mechanical tachometer. This version uses a female terminal cap for OEM-style connector compatibility.

Performance Benefits
The circuit board module and magnetic pickup trigger hold timing steady without the wear and drift of a points-based system, while the hardened steel shaft and brass terminal support long-term durability under the added mechanical load of driving the tachometer. Centrifugal and vacuum advance are both included, allowing the timing curve to be tuned for carbureted street or performance driving on the Y-Block Thunderbird specifically.

COMPATIBLE WITH
FORD Y-BLOCK V8 (MECHANICAL TACH DRIVE)

NOTES
• Designed exclusively for 1955–1957 Ford Thunderbird Y-Block V8 applications equipped with a mechanical tachometer drive.
• Features a female-style distributor cap — requires plug wires with male terminals.
• Will not fit standard Y-Block applications without a mechanical tach drive — see the Ford Y-Block V8 Pro Series Ready to Run Distributor for those applications.
• Not compatible with Ford Y-Block applications in full-size cars, trucks, or other vehicles — Thunderbird fitment only.
• Requires an external coil with a minimum output of 35,000V — no separate ignition box required.
• This distributor is designed for a 12 volt electrical system with an alternator and a performance ignition coil of 35,000 V or more.
• It is not compatible with a generator and cannot be used with a ballast resistor.
• Distributor gear is most compatible with cast iron hydraulic or solid flat tappet camshafts; consult camshaft manufacturer for recommended gear material before installation.
